When comparing \u00a0assembly quotes, the lowest price from a control panel builder should not be the default choice. A low bid may reflect real efficiency, but it can also point to poor quality from a vendor that is cutting corners to reduce costs. While the cost may be lower upfront, the total cost can be considerably more if issues result in downtime, failures, safety issues, and other unexpected costs. Signs that your vendor is cutting corners can be seen in the design, build, testing, and documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start With Design <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The design sets the foundation for the build and, if done poorly, creates downstream complications and delays. The control panel builder may provide drawings that technically work, but create issues at installation, startup, or later modification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short-circuit current rating is the one most often missed, because the calculation is tedious and the field rarely checks it until an authority having jurisdiction does. The National Electrical Code (NEC)<\/a> Article 409 requires applicable industrial control panels to be marked with their SCCR, which must be adequate for the available fault current at the installation. That rating has to be based on the panel\u2019s components and an accepted evaluation method, not copied from the interrupting rating of the main breaker. A panel marked with no SCCR, or marked with a high SCCR that the vendor cannot support, is a sign the calculation may have been skipped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other design corner that may be cut is a panel built with no room to grow. A subpanel packed to the walls with no spare DIN rail, no spare terminals, no open breaker or I\/O positions, and duct loaded to capacity forces a full rework the first time the process changes or a point gets added. The cheap, tightly packed build gets expensive at the first modification, so expansion room is a total-cost question rather than an aesthetic one. This is partly a spec decision, so the real tell is whether the vendor asks about expansion and leaves duct fill and spare positions accordingly. Not every tight panel is a shortcut. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A third area is thermal management. The shortcut is a control panel builder who sizes the enclosure to fit the parts and never runs a heat-load calculation, so the panel has no fan, filter, vent, or air conditioner where the load actually needs one. Some NEMA-rated boxes are sealed on purpose to avoid ingress, so the tell is whether the vendor asks for the ambient conditions and enclosure rating and runs a heat-load calculation or just assumes it is fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Telltale Signs Of Build Short Cuts <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Build quality is where workmanship can be seen across the life of the control panel.\u00a0 Poor termination quality does not show in a photo and often survives a bench check. Incorrect torque produces loose connections that arc and fail, and loose or corroded terminals can cause intermittent faults under thermal cycling or vibration in service. Depending on the specification, shop standard, and terminal manufacturer requirements, stranded conductors may need ferrules or other approved termination methods. Documented torque values and proper separation between high- and low-voltage circuits are also signs that the shop follows a controlled build process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wire dressing, or organizing, routing, and securing all the wires and cables inside the control panel assembly, is another area for shortcuts. Spaghetti wiring results from poor wire routing. Wires may be run point-to-point across the subpanel instead of through wire ducts, ducts may be overfilled, or wires may be left too long and bundled without a clear path. The result is a panel that can trap heat against components, is harder to trace and service, and is more likely to hide termination or labeling problems.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minimal Testing Can Ignore Issues <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Testing is where a rushed shop compresses the schedule, which is also the step that catches termination faults before they leave the shop. A connection torqued wrong will often pass a static continuity check and then fail once the panel is energized and loaded, so functional testing and torque verification are important.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask whether the shop performs point-to-point checks, torque verification, and powered functional testing before shipment, and whether the results are recorded per panel. For more complex control panel projects, ask whether the vendor offers a formal factory acceptance test that includes customer-witnessed functional checks, simulated I\/O, alarm verification, and review of final drawings. A builder that can describe a repeatable test procedure with recorded results is verifying its own work rather than relying on a quick power-up check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Documentation Red Flags <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Documentation should show how the panel was designed, built, tested, and approved for the installation. At minimum, the drawing package should match the finished control panel assembly. That includes schematics, a one-line diagram where applicable, a bill of materials, wire numbers that match the drawings, terminal identification, device labels, and records for changes made during the build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCCR documentation is especially important because the panel marking must be supported by the components and the evaluation method used. A vendor should be able to provide the SCCR basis, not just point to a number on the nameplate. If the panel is marked with a high SCCR but the shop cannot explain or document how it was determined, the rating should be questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same applies to part substitutions. A substitute component may be acceptable, but it has to fit the electrical design, enclosure rating, listing requirements, and documented bill of materials. A weak documentation process makes it difficult to confirm what was installed, why it was changed, and whether the change affected the panel rating or approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
