Efficiently transporting bags at check-in and\narrival is imperative for any airline. Ultimately, baggage handling must\noptimally organize operations to meet time constraints and ensure a good\npassenger experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, there are\ntwo types of baggage handling systems\u2014distributed and centralized. Centralized\nsystems are the most prevalent type. Distributed systems work differently and\ncome with their own share of benefits. But which is better?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How Distributed and\nCentralized Baggage Handling Systems Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A distributed system has\ndifferent levels, but, at its highest capacity, all field devices (motor\ncontrol panels, encoders, variable frequency drives, etc.) communicate back to\na PLC (programmable logic controller). The difference, then, in a centralized\nsystem is that all fields hardwire back to the MCP (main control panel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another key distinction\nbetween the two systems is proximity. Distributed systems have all appropriate\nequipment in one area, while centralized systems require conduits to power the\nconveyors and communicate to the individual devices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distributed Baggage Systems\nOffer Visibility, Proximity, and More Reliable Uptime<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A distributed bagging system is also easier to diagnose when something goes wrong. In these moments, the clock is ticking, and time is money in the airline industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a distributed system,\nthe associated functions for a piece of equipment are in the same area, such as\npower supply and controls, which are found right on the machine. Should a\nfailure arise, operators can identify the problem quickly without losing time\nin the diagnostic phase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kasacontrols.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/controls-wiring-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203\" width=\"293\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kasacontrols.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/controls-wiring-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/kasacontrols.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/controls-wiring-1-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kasacontrols.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/controls-wiring-1-585x553.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if a power\nroll bed is not working, you can look at the VFD (variable frequency drive) and\npower supply and rapidly deduce the problem. This speed to diagnosis ensures\nthat there is minimal downtime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A distributed system offers\nvisibility. You have full knowledge of where all the parts and pieces are and\nhow they work together. This type of system provides a clear advantage when it\ncomes to time-critical activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While a distributed system typically\nrequires a higher upfront investment than a centralized system, it reduces\nlabor needs, is easier to install, and delivers more uptime to repay that\nadditional cost over the life of the system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Centralized Systems Are\nMore Common and Require More Conduits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Centralized systems are the\nmost common type in baggage handling. They are more affordable upfront than\ndistributed systems, but the total cost of ownership (TCO) is often higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a piece of\nconveyor from a centralized system may sit 165 feet from the control panel that\nrequires a power supply, a motor, and four proximity switches. This setup would\nneed three to four conduits, each running 165 feet from conveyor to control\npanel. In contrast, a distributed system would only need one IP67 VFD, which\nmounts to the side of the conveyor using only one cable to deliver power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preventing Downtime and\nFuture-Proofing Should Be a Priority<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When choosing a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kasacontrols.com\/bhs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">baggage handling system<\/a>, many don\u2019t consider downtime prevention as a cost\njustification. Nor do they look at future-proofing operations. Everything is arrangeable in any flow\u2014think of it as you would\nLego. When you want to alter the layout, the only requirement is new\nprogramming. Many other industries that depend on conveying have begun to adopt\ndistributed systems because of the simplification, flexibility and superior\nuptime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airlines and airports should consider making the change to distributed IO architecture, focusing on TCO rather than the initial capital investment. Implementing it now puts you a good place to increase efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
